Red Lion Inn

The Red Lion Inn, located in the heart of the Berkshires in Massachusetts, NY makes a great destination for a short weekend getaway.  Not only does the Inn itself offer a unique experience for visitors, but the surrounding areas also provide a variety of activities and entertainment perfect for any guest.

Established in 1773, the Red Lion Inn became recognized as a historical landmark after providing headquarters for the protest to post-war taxation known as, “Shay’s rebellion.”  While the Inn started off small, consisting of about eight rooms, it served as the center of village life for the budding town of Stockbridge, Massachusetts. Eventually, it evolved, as did the neighboring towns of Lenox and Great Barrington. And, throughout its development, the Inn changed hands a number of times while serving an assortment of purposes. Ultimately, however, it never shed its function as a hotel. Today, the historic Red Lion Inn has over 100 rooms furnished with antiques, artwork, china, and colonial pewter. It is prided for continuing to provide gracious hospitality as it did when it first opened; during an era when attention was paid to every detail.

Surrounding the hotel is the small, quaint town of Stockbridge. There, you can discover an array of boutiques selling locally made knick-knacks, jewelry and artwork amongst other unique finds. Taverns and restaurants distinct to the area line the streets, serving homemade dishes eager to please your taste buds. Furthermore, Stockbridge is home to the Berkshire Theatre Festival, one of the oldest professional regional theatres in the United States.

If that is not enough, you can take a short venture to Lenox or Great Barrington where one can find a number of museums and additional historical sites, shops, restaurants and performing arts centers. Also nearby is the well-known Kripalu Center, a great place to spend the day in relaxation.

Finally, as with many historical places, there is much beauty to be seen. Especially within the fall season, the area is bursting with color, inviting visitors to relax, feel welcome and at home.  Whether it is the lobby of the Inn, the surrounding buildings or the beautiful scenery, the Red Lion Inn makes for a truly unique and wonderful visit to another place in time.
